Music is a real family affair

A little older and a whole lot more confident, former local girls Alanna and Alicia Egan are back in Bendigo this Saturday night to launch their new album, Two in a Book.
In 2006 the Egan sisters launched their first album Funny She’s So Much Like Me, backed by accomplished violinist Amy Bennett and Andrew Sheppard’s acoustic strings.
It was the first time I had seen the raven-haired twin sisters perform and was impressed with their melodic, jazzy voices and earthy lyrics.
Their love of music began as babies.  While mum Maudee and dad Michael strummed their guitars and sang, Alanna and Alicia rolled about on their bunny rugs imbibing the beats and comforting sounds of their parents’ voices.
Alicia said her parents were a folk duo in the 60s and they had friends who would come over and sing in the loungeroom together.
“Music was just a part of our lives and as we got older, we started to join in,” she said.
“Our parents taught us songs and dad was kind of our first guitarist and accompanist,” Alanna said.
“When we were about 11, we went and had some piano lessons but didn’t study music until we were in our 20s.”
Alanna insists they did a lot of preparation as youngsters though, putting together drawn-out concerts and performing for their brot...
