Avid watchers of the Tour de France have witnessed their fair share of thrills and spills in cycling ranks this year.
It is a sickening sound when metal, carbon and skin make contact with the road surface.
It is much the same when we hear of a rider down.
The immediate fear is who is it and what are the consequences of the incident?
 It could well result in a serious injury, lacerations or broken bones..
These are the times when pride is set aside as pain and suffering have an overwhelming influence, not to mention the far-reaching shock that can be just as hard on others in our immediate sphere of family and friends.
These are also the times we come to appreciate the many in our community who feel the pain with us.
The following is an account of what happened when one such rider was down; not from falling off a bike but being involved in a bike club event preparation.
If you have ever wondered what would happen if you took a star picket, broke it and let the remaining piece spear you through the leg then I am the man you need to talk to.
On the weekend I was setting up for a state round of mountain bike racing which had me placing star pickets to run a temporary fence from.
