Champion Bendigo rifle shooter Geoff Grenfell has begun his quest for gold at the Commonwealth Games in India during October.

The four-time winner of the Queen’s Prize at the Wellsford Range flew to India last weekend for the start of a test event in New Delhi where extreme heat was a feature of the opening days.

“We made it through to India but competitors from England, Jersey and Scotland could not get flights to this week’s competition,” he said.

“Temperatures have been in the mid-40s each day and this caused havoc with the electronic target system.

“Because of the extreme heat the shooting competition has now been moved forward to start at 7am each day to try and get through the daily matches before the heat sets in.”

Grenfell last represented Australia at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Canada where he won a gold medal in the full bore event.

Meanwhile, rifle shooters

from around Australia and New Zealand converged on the Wellsford Range last weekend for the 2010 Victorian Rifle Association Queen’s Prize.

The range is now regarded as the best in Australia after undergoing a major upgrade in 2002 and offers a target gallery of 24 cantilever target mechanisms and offers shooting ranges from 300 to 1000 yards.

In the Queen’s Prize, victory went to Stephen Negus who

won narrowly from fellow New South Wales competitor Richard Jones.

The Grand Aggregate for the week-long tournament combined the results of the Symes Medal with the Queen’s Prize was won by Jim Bailey of Holsworthy.
