UPDATE: PIPELINE PROJECT HIJACKED
By Anthony Radford
$100 million Goulburn to Lake Eppalock pipeline launch

MORE than 100 angry local farmers hijacked the official launch of the $100 million Goulburn to Lake Eppalock pipeline at Colbinabbin this afternoon.

Only minutes before Premier John Brumby and Liberal Party Senator Michael Ronaldson pressed the button to start the pumps, tractors, trucks and dust-blown utes converged on the pump station, blocking all exits.

Mr Brumby, local politicians, a large media contingent and contractors were stuck inside the facility for more than an hour after the ceremony ended.

During that time, Mr Brumby spoke to the angry mob, who were protesting against the planned pipeline from the same system to Melbourne.

Mr Brumby answered questions from the vocal group, despite calls such as ‘Is that Brumby or is it Hitler?’

After negotiations that involved the media and a vote from the farmers, two large John Deere tractors were moved and Mr Brumby was allowed to be moved.

The event marred what otherwise was a red-letter day for Bendigo.

Despite a little bit of political argy bargy between the Liberal and Labor parties over who organised the protestors, the launch saw water flow to Bendigo from the large Goulburn system for the first time in its history.

While no one denies it is good for Bendigo, the rural communtiy is genuinely devasted by the threat to their already stressed livelihoods, this region has been in drought for many years, many farmers survive solely by drought assistance making the difference in survival. When their water allocations are threatened making an already precarious situation more precarious, I do not believe it is unreasonable to get answers from Mr Brumby. He has continually answered all questions with party policy and does not seem to understand how threatened these communities are by the decisions he has made. To insult the intelligence of people with a legitimate reason to protest by saying that it was politically organised by opposing parties is further evidence that he has no ground root connections whatsoever. These people are fighting for their way of life and for their livelihoods. Policical? certainly, but it was not the motivation of the organisers who have continually tried other ways to get answers and to raise awareness of what this pipeline truly means. As for recent comments in your paper by some politicians who can no longer see the need for water restrictions in Bendigo to be so tough, think of the region it is coming from, our restrictions are just as tough and will remain so to guarantee your water supply, we should not go without so you can have green grass. Our farmers should not have to consider what to do with stock, pasture or other food crops that benefit the wider community for it either. It is a pity that your readers have not been given the full reasons for the protest, this is only a fraction of it but as you must surely admit, if it was your livelihood that was threatened, wouldn't you wish to protest too?
