THE Karuna Group may be unknown to most in Bendigo but for those who have used its services, it will never be forgotten. Karuna is Sanskrit for compassion, and last week the group marked 20 years of compassionate service in Bendigo. The group’s volunteers work closely with palliative care to help remove the mental and physical suffering of those in need. It all began in 1987, when a Tibetan Lama who visited Bendigo asked whether there was any service available to help people develop a peaceful mind at the end of their lives. Karuna co-ordinator Robyn Andrea said a working group was then formed resulting in the Karuna Group and palliative care. “Members were involved in the initial introduction of palliative care within Bendigo and with the development of the first volunteer training program,” Robyn said. She said Karuna’s services now extend beyond palliative care to helping people living with cancer, providing pet therapy and weekly meditation. “We also provide relaxation therapists to clients at home, who are all trained through the Bendigo Health Care Group in palliative care.” Karuna is a non religious, not-for-profit group made up entirely of volunteers. One of those volunteers, Bernice Smith, was recognised for 20 years of service to Karuna at the anniversary last week. About 30 Karuna members, guests and palliative care staff attended the garden party celebration, which included afternoon tea and entertainment by the Rusty Divas.
