THE red ribbon is the international symbol of HIV and AIDS awareness. A concept conceived by artists in New York more than 13 years ago, the colour symbolises blood and danger while the tails of the ribbon symbolise life flowing away. Red ribbons are sold annually around World AIDS Day, which is recognised internationally on December 1. Money raised through the sale of red ribbons is used to support services for people living with HIV/AIDS including medical services, counselling, support and peer education groups. World AIDS week runs from November 24, with many events being staged in Bendigo.
