CBD resident unhappy with parking changes
ANOTHER CBD resident has come out against the City of Greater Bendigo council’s new car parking strategy.
The council has turned 10 45-degree angle car parks either side of Kylie Clark’s driveway in Mollison Street into 16 90-degree spaces.
She was so unhappy with the changes, under the cover of darkness she went outside and painted a couple of them out with black paint. “I literally have to reverse across both lands of traffic to get out of my driveway because the parks are so close to my driveway and they are on such a tight angle,” she said.
“I can’t see at all.
“If there is a big four wheel drive parked next to my driveway I have to blindly come out and assume people are going to stop for me.
‘To get in my driveway I have to swerve out onto the other side of the road and turn in.”
The mother of two was in little doubt the council had got its priorities wrong.
“I don’t mind them increasing the amount of parking around the place, but it needs to be safe.
“The council needs to build this multi-storey car park instead of band-aid fixes that are making it unsafe.”
Council acting chief executive officer Jos Duivenvoorden said Mrs Clark’s driveway was not unsafe.
“What we have done there is safe,” he said. “With the traffic speeds and volume there, we think it is an excellent area for these spaces.
“On-site inspections have been made following the spotting out and some minor amendments were made before the bays were marked.
“It is not intended to undertake any further amendments at this point.”
