Future sites for developments
A REPORT into the possible future uses of former mine land in Bendigo, Eaglehawk and Huntly has recommended some sites be developed for future use. The report analysed 10 sites: Murchison Mine – Loddon Valley Highway, Eaglehawk; Leggos Calcine Sand Dump – Green Street, California Gully; Needle Mine – Eaglehawk Road, California Gully; Viola Road/Deeplead Road, Huntly; Specimen Hill Road, West Bendigo; Red Calcine Sands (former speedway site) Marong Road, West Bendigo; Chum Street Crown Land, Bendigo; Lazarus Street/Harvey Street/Happy Valley Road (West Bendigo); Former Dai Gum San site, Long Gully and Central Nell Gwynne – Happy Valley Road, West Bendigo. City of Greater Bendigo mayor David Jones said the Future Uses for Former Mine Land project was commissioned to assess the feasibility of reclaiming old crown land mining sites for more beneficial future uses. “Former mine-affected lands now represents an important land resource for our growing municipality provided that contaminated soils and other issues, such as capping mine shafts, can be addressed,” he said. “Through the study each of the sites was assessed for its environmental, heritage and conservation characteristics and also the potential for residential, commercial or community development. “Two of the sites (Leggos Calcine Sand Dump in California Gully and the former speedway site in Marong Road, West Bendigo) were found to be unsuitable for any future development due to the calcine contamination on both sites. The Marong Road site will be capped and revegetated over time. “It was found that parts of a number of the sites do have the potential to be redeveloped for various uses in the future,” said Cr Jones. “The site with the greatest potential is the Chum Street site and the project steering group has recommended that a master plan be prepared for that site so that all the potentially competing demands can be considered.” Other sites identified are the Needle Mine , Viola Road at Huntly, Lazarus Street and Central Nell Gwynne sites.
