Strathfieldsaye cricket club to move
A chapter in the history of cricket in Strathfieldsaye will close tomorrow.
When stumps are drawn it brings an end to one era and the beginning of a new one.
The development of the current cricket ground was started in 1983 by president Tony Tuck and secretary Ken Yates when they approached the Shire of Strathfieldsaye to develop an old dairy farm site into a modern sports ground.
Many working bees were held by club members to get the facility up and running.
In 1984 the Strathfieldsaye Cricket Club joined the Bendigo District Cricket Association and used the St Vincents Oval at
Junortoun before playing their first game at Strathfieldsaye in 1985 when the ground was officially opened by Strathfieldsaye Shire president Cr Alec Sandner.
On home soil the Jets won that very first game on the former dairy farm site when they defeated Bendigo by 40 runs thanks to the batting of Kent Ward with 54.
He was ably supported by Paul Johnston with 25 and Wayne Grinham contributed 23.
Now the Strathfieldsaye Jets look to the future as they move across the road to the impressive sporting complex with a brand new oval and practice wickets and the new state of the art pavilion which is now under construction.
They will boast the best facilities in the local cricket competition.
The Jets have certainly come a long way in a short time.
