BENDIGO rowers Luke Treble and Alex Garvin are headed to Sydney to contest the Australian Under 23 double scull championships. The duo were in top form at Geelong last weekend and head to the harbour city confident they can return home with a medal. Eighteeen-year-old Luke Treble attends Catholic College and 17-year-old Girton Grammar student Alex Garvin are at Lake Weeroona at 6am on most mornings as part of their rigorous seven sessions a week training regime. “We raced at Geelong in both the A grade and the B grade sections for victories over 1000 metres ,” Luke said, “This is the short course distance and normally we would race over 2000 metres so at the Geelong meet it was good sprint training going in to the nationals. “We finished second recently at the Victorian championships held at Nagambie,” Luke said. The Bendigo rowing club duo are coached by Sheldon Gilbert and although competing against rowers with greater experience Alex Garvin said they are in great shape to match their opponents on the water next week. “In the Under 23 double sculls there will be some competitors who may be bigger and stronger than us and given our good form at present we have a great opportunity to finish in the medals,” Alex said. “We are a relatively new pairing having only raced together over the past five months and as well as competing we also do a lot of endurance and strength training. “Once we finish our schooling we would like to get in to the national program and see where life takes us,’’ Alex said. Coach Sheldon Gilbert said both rowers have a great future in the sport. “Both Luke and Alex are tall and a good weight and they have worked very hard to get where they are now,” Sheldon said. “They get on really well together and are great prospects.’’
