Karters gear up for action
Local Go Kart driver Steven MacKenzie heads to Gippsland this weekend as part of his preparations for the national championships.
Round One of the Power Series begins in Morwell tomorrow where there will be two heats and then a further two races on Sunday.
The weekend action is part of the build up to the Australian National Sprint Kart Championship which will be decided in Launceston over the Easter long weekend.
Then the Power Series resumes at Rochester on the weekend of April 12 and 13.

Juniors at their best

Kangaroo Flat Junior Fire Brigade has just completed their best ever season on the competition circuit.
The brigade won region events at Swan Hill, Bendigo, Kangaroo Flat, Kerang and Echuca then capped it off last weekend by winning the Grand Aggregate at the State Championships in Traralgon.
 Bombers line up
The Bendigo Bombers will unveil their new line up for the 2008 season tomorrow.
The Bombers will be taking on the Coburg Tigers in a full scale practice match at the QEO.
Reserves at 10.10am and the seniors will play at 1pm.

Jockey on top

Jockey Brad Rawiller is riding the crest of a wave.
The 29-year-old is now his lightest in 10 years and his career has never been in better shape as he partners the exciting galloper Weekend Hustler in some of the big autumn classics.
After winning the Oakleigh Plate the duo is now primed for the $1 million Newmarket Handicap at Flemington on March 8.

Jets cup feature

There will be racing of a different kind at the Strathfieldsaye Sporting Complex this Saturday night.
The Strath Jets Cup will be the feature race on the six event card which is held indoors and is part of the celebrations to see out the old cricket ground and welcome in the new one across the road.
If you would like to book a table contact Brent Yates on 0438 428 479.

Handy trotters

The sound of champagne corks popping echoed across Sedgwick late on Sunday night as locals celebrated the fortunes of a couple of handy trotters called Will Trapper and Viva La Fever.
The duo won the heats on the Interdominion Trotters Championship at Moonee Valley and national media have been giving the tiny hamlet a lot of publicity.

Grand final

A great crowd turned out to witness the grand final of the ladies pennant bowls where Bendigo East had a resounding 34 shot win over Bendigo Golf.
So big was the number of bowls enthusiasts watching the final at the Barnard Street greens that it was hard to find a parking spot.
Those who left their cars on the street for the duration of the big final had to scramble to avoid the little note from the council on their windscreen.
Would have made it an expensive day.

The far north

Football bosses may lead the high life but some may struggle to read a road map.
Melbourne chairman Paul Gardner was quoted in the national press that it was time for his club to step off the Leyland Brothers tour they have encountered during the pre season matches.
The poor old Dees have played in Canberra, Geelong and Cairns and tonight they are in Bendigo.
The Melbourne boss wants a game just south of the fruit fly inspector and the AFL is sending his club to Cranbourne.
That will give him something to ponder during the drive up the new Calder Freeway today.

 Junior search

It is that time of year when junior football clubs are conducting registration days to attract new members and families to their sport.
Some clubs are urgently seeking more young players to pull on the boots and South Bendigo can be contacted through Tanya Balnaves on 5447-7419

Also on the look-out for more juniors is Strathfieldsaye Junior Football Club particularly in the Under 12, Under 13 and Under 15 teams.
Their coaching program allows every individual player to develop their skills to appreciate the benefits of teamwork and above all to have fun.
Interested players should contact Lisa Natoli on 5441-5503

In control

The Bendigo Radio Control Car Club has conducted its first meeting of the new season at the track located near the McIvor Highway in Strathdale.
Club members are in training as the prepare to head to the Tasmanian titles which will be contested over the long weekend in March.
The club said going on the form at the opening meet there should be a few prizes returning from Tassie.

Tired venues

Bendigo is fortunate to have such great sporting facilities.
We have produced some outstanding achievers over the years but some of the current facilities are starting to look a little tired.
With our close proximity to an international airport and the soon to be completed Calder Highway there are likely to be several opportunities in the future to have more of our sporting teams playing in national competitions.
The Bendigo Spirit showed that the community will come along and watch top level competition at the Schweppes Centre and there may be opportunities down the track to have an A League soccer team which could play at the Tom Flood Sports Centre with the right infrastructure.
There are great opportunities for netball through the ANZ Championship but the first hurdle would be to build a state of the art netball stadium.

Fast honour

The marketing arm of the Bendigo Jockey Club was on the ball last weekend.
Within an hour of Reaan winning the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield the club had circulated the news that the David Hayes galloper had joined the Nursery Of Champions honour board.
Reann won his maiden at Bendigo on October 20, 2007 and now joins the illustrious company of Better Loosen Up, Bletchingly and Hyperno who all recorded their first race wins at Bendigo before going on to Group 1 glory.

Win for Leon

Kangaroo Flat triathlete Leon Griffin has added another title to his name.
The iron man has claimed the Australian Long Distance Triathlon Championship after exiting the water behind superfish Steve Hackett in the 2km swim and then he really put the pedal down to increase his lead in the 80k cycle before cruising home in the 20km run to win by nine minutes.
