Educate the community
A PROJECT that aims to promote discrimination-free zones for young people was this week launched in Bendigo.
The project aims to improve feelings of connectedness and inclusion for everyone, particularly young people, and help young people identify welcoming places to access regardless of their sex, race, or sexuality.
The project also aims to educate the community, most importantly young people, that discrimination is not acceptable and that it can be harmful and in many cases illegal.
Organisations, groups and businesses are being urged to show their support of the initiative by displaying a range of new community awareness products, developed by a working group of organisations and local government, including WayOut, Way2be, CAN Victoria – Country Awareness Network, FAB-CV, Greater City of Bendigo, Police and Council and local young people.
The posters and stickers developed state: “Discrimination Free Zone” and “No sexism, racism or homophobia tolerated. Making a better place for everyone”.
The items will be made available to community centres, health care providers, educational centres and businesses.
CAN executive officer Adam Wright said the new initiative promoted an inclusive society.
