Time is standing still

Forward planning
NEVER let it be said that the wheels of progress move quickly.
A Bendigo Weekly reader jumped onto last month’s story about the need for
action to begin pans to develop a rink road to take the traffic out of the city’s CBD.
Unlike VicRoads and the City of Greater Bendigo council, the reader moved quickly to go back through his files to look at ways the issues had been brought up n the past.
What resulted was a 1985 edition of the City of Bendigo and Borough of Eaglehawk Street and Road Maps directory, drawn and compiled by Wesley C Harry.
Of interest was the map on page 50. It was a map drawn up by Mr Harry on planned modifications to the city’s road network beyond 1991.
What the map shows is how many ideas were around at the time. Some have been acted on and make up parts of the inner box today. However, the most prominent new road on this map, a link road taking traffic out of the CBD is seemingly no closer to planning now than it was 23 years ago.
