Seasoned cyclist cooks up a winning position
By Eddie Barkla
Report by Alan Besley
Experienced campaigner Terry Schintler has taken out the Marong to Wedderburn Classic road race and, as of Sunday, is leading the winter series.
The former Austral Wheelrace
winner was part of the 13-minute bunch which quickly reeled in the 16-minute markers by the time the riders got to Llanelly.
Together the two bunches continued to mow down the out markers while keeping their own numbers over the
undulating section near Melville Caves.
Once the leading bunch got on to the Logan-Wedderburn road the group were able to combine well and hold off any challenges from the scratch markers as they turned in to the main street of Wedderburn.
Terry Schintler poured on the power over the final 600 metres to salute
the crowd at the finish line.
The main bunch were two minutes behind and the fastest time honours went to David Pell.
Schintler now leads the 2008 Myer Bendigo Classics Road Race Series from Simon Bennett with Carly McCoombe in third placing.
The fourth round of the series will be the 60-kilometre Inglewood Classic on Sunday, June 29.
Bendigo District Cycling Club members will now focus their attention on the popular three-day tour of central Victoria over the Queen’s Birthday holiday weekend.
