A multi-disciplinary centre in Bendigo will "improve responses to sexual assualt".

One of four centres announced in the Victorian Coalition Government's 2012-13 budget today, the Bendigo centre will include Victoria Police, child protection authorities, and specialised counselling services.

While it is not costed in the budget announcement, Nationals Member for Northern Victoria Damian Drum put the cost at about $7 million..

There are centres in Frankston and Mildura, with another already planned for Geelong.

Deputy Premier and Police Minister Peter Ryan said the facilities had already proven successful.

“Child abuse and sexual assault are abhorrent crimes, and the Coalition Government is taking measures to ensure victims have the support they need and that perpetrators of sexual abuse are brought to justice,” he said.

“This new centre will see officers from Victoria Police’s specialised Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Teams  working alongside Department of Human Services child protection workers and sexual assault counsellors to give victims the support they need.

“Sexual assault and child abuse have historically been under-reported to police. By providing both policing and support services under the one roof there is an opportunity to turn this around."
