Bendigo Botanic Gardens will finally have a full-time curator once more.
“We’re accepting it as a compromise”, Friends of Bendigo Botanic Gardens  chair Jane Cleary said.
“We would have liked a curator who could have overseen the whole development through all the major works that will be done, but it is good we will now have a curator who is a horticulturalist.”
City of Greater Bendigo council endorsed a recommendation at its meeting this week for the creation of two new positions.
A gardens development officer – expected to be a landscape architect – will begin early next year for a four-year term to oversee the major works about to be undertaken as part of the Master Plan.
A curator – expected to be a horticulutralist – will begin next financial year in an ongoing role.
Council Presentation and Assets director Darren Fuzzard said discussions with the Friends had clarified for council the importance of having two appointments, working in tandem to implement the Master Plan.
“We always hoped to bring on a curator in the financial year following the appointment of a landscape architect, and our discussions with the Friends convinced us not to delay too long,” Mr Fuzzard said.
“We see these as complementary positions.”
Mrs Cleary said while the Friends would have liked major work to begin this year, it was also important that people could access the gardens across the holiday period.
She paid tribute to councillor Lisa Ruffell, who is a member of the Friends, and who supported them through the campaign for timely implementation of the Master Plan.
“You don’t always realise what a treasure you have in a person,” Mrs Cleary said.
“She really stuck her neck out for us, and helped us achieve this.”
