G.N. Braun

Legume Man Books, $19.95Local author Geoff Brown (a.k.a. G.N. Braun) is the president of the Australian Horror Writers Association, so you can imagine most of his books are pretty scary stuff.

His latest book, entitled Hammered, doesn’t quite fit into the category of horror, however it is just as, if not more, confronting than those he is accustomed to writing.

Right from the outset it details how he was sexually assaulted as a child, and how that – along with growing up on the rough streets of Sunshine in Melbourne’s west – led him down the path to become a drug addict and dealer.

From evading the police to his time spent in detox and rehab, Hammered details Geoff’s steps to being drug-free, as he is today.

Geoff said the main reason behind the book was to try to make a difference to those battling with drug addiction.

“I’ve always been a writer, but I wanted to get my experiences out there and show people that there is a way out.

“There’s plenty of tales that glamourise the lifestyle, and plenty that over cautionalise it as well, I just wanted to portray it as it is and take the mystery away from it.”

Geoff Brown will be talking about his memoir at the Bendigo Writers Festival, at 2.30pm on Saturday, August 11. He will also host the horror-writing session, at 1.30pm on Sunday August 12. - Joel Peterson
