Mayor goes on attack

CITY of Greater Bendigo mayor Alec Sandner has gone on the attack over a story in the Bendigo Weekly today.

The Weekly today reported comments from councillors suggesting an option was being considered to give Mr Niemann an interim 12-month contract so the new council could decide whether or not to give him a long-term contract.

Epsom Ward councillor Lisa Ruffell and Eaglehawk Ward councillor Peter Cox confirmed the issue was being discussed among councillors.

Cr Sandner has accused Cr Ruffell, not Cr Cox, of being disrespectful Mr Niemann

“It’s about respect,” he said.

“As councillors we expect to be treated by staff with respect.  This is a two way street.  Our staff, with who we work so closely with and on who we rely, are entitled to be treated with respect in return.

“I’ve spoken to a number of councillors today and the vast majority are shocked and disappointed with the report in the Weekly.”

Cr Sandner said the option was not available to council.

“The suggestion by Cr Ruffell that council is considering an interim contract extension is clearly wrong,” he said.

“A contract extension is not an option under the Local Government Act or under the CEO’s current contract.  There must be a new contract negotiated.

“The CEO’s contract will expire on December 18.   In his current contract it is clearly written that if he seeks reappointment to the position he must be told whether or not he has been successful no later than three months prior to the contract’s expiry date.

“Therefore he must be told no later than September 18, 2012 if he has been successful.  This date clearly falls within this current council’s term.”

Yes, but we the ratepayers meed to know the truth and we also need the best person for the job, it is that simple. So stop hiding this Cr Sander. He should have to re apply for his job along will all the applicants so we do get the best person for the
job.

Opps! I thought the article said, 'new 12 month contract'. a couple of words I was thinking about while reading the article; Nepotisum, professionalisum, responsibilty, civility to collegues, (I know three words) and due process, (did it again).

Cr, Sandner needs to get his head out of the clouds. "“As councillors we expect to be treated by staff with respect. This is a two way street. Our staff, with who we work so closely with and on who we rely, are entitled to be treated with respect in return."
Read your own words Cr. Sandner The council staff, need to treat the ratepayers with respect, not in the way they treat us now. They should remember that we pay their wages and they work for us, they are not a law above anyone else

are not the days of yore over yet? i would think in the age in which we find ourselves, the intent and desire to close ranks on such a frivolous and petty cause, should beckon the very question, how will this fellow perform in his duties? ... whatever
you think, his staff.. do they not know better now? hmm so much undone about bendigo....

For years ratepayers have known that weak senior staff, as well as some weak councillors, have beenresponisble for the miserable perfomrance of council. The CEO has been part of that assessment and it is entirely proper that there should be debate about
him continuing. The present council should not renew his contract but might offer him a short-term contract so that the new council can make a longer appointment either of Mr. Niemann or of someone else. We can expect that the new council will have many new
faces of people keen on reform as well as CRs Cox and Ruffell, both of whom are doing a good job. Cr. Reade is ready to sing the praises of Mr. Niemann but I really do wonder if he has ever worked with a top flight CEO in other councils.

I cannot find 'interim' in the Weekly's story. Seems mayor Alec does not want the public to know what is happening, or for councillors to have an opinion or allow them to let the public know their views are. It is clear to me from what Alec said, a one
year,, contract is in fact allowed. No where in the Act does it specify contracts of 4 years. Playing a word games over 'extension' seems pretty small thinking. Stick with telling us the full story Weekly.
