THUNDER LOSS
THE Bendigo Thunder have once again been narrowly defeated in the latest Victorian Womens Football League round.
The Thunder went down by four points to rivals North Ballarat, after another terrible start.
The women went into quarter time 4.3.27 to 0.0.0, the second poor start in as many weeks.
The Thunder came back and outscored Ballarat in the second quarter, but still trailed by two goals at the main break.
Throwing everything at the visitors, the Thunder took the lead in the fourth quarter and looked set to take it in a nail biter, but a solid mark by North Ballarat inside its 50 metre mark in the last minute, robbed the Thunder of a sorely needed victory.
Final scores were
8.8. 56 to 9.6.60
Coach Russell Jeffrey said the poor start was the difference.
“We need to ensure we take it to them in the first quarter,” he said.
“We have lost three games by four points and each time we have lost it in the first quarter.
“The girls are amazing and they give their all, we just need to focus on coming out strong from the outset.”
Goal scorers for the Thunder were Bree Martin, Emma Grant, Angela Foley and Cherie O’Neil, all with two. Best players were Maddi Kindellan, Angela Foley, Millie Hipwell, Emma Wolters, Bree Martin and Cherie O’Neil. Thunder remain in fourth position on the VWFL North West conference ladder.
Round Eight see’s the Thunder take on La Trobe.
LACROSSE LOSE TO UNI
MELBOURNE University Lacrosse defeated Bendigo Lacrosse 14-3 on the Western Oval this week.
Brett Sexton (2) and John Webb (1) were the goal scorers for Bendigo.
Best on ground for Bendigo were Mark Reader, Joel Evans and Chris Thompson.
Bendigo’s next match is on May 29 at the La Trobe University Athletics Track at Flora Hill against Moreland.
MINERS THRASHED
THE Fighting Miners Juniors turned in a shocker when they were thrashed 49-0 by Geelong in their rugby union clash at Shadforth Park on Saturday.
After an indifferent first half when a flat and lethargic Miners team conceded three tries to trail 17-0 at the break, the Miners structure disintegrated in the second half.
Defenders fell off tackles and a plethora of penalties were conceded at the breakdown.
Geelong dominated possession and used it to good effect, scoring five more tries.
The Miners’ cause was not helped when five-eighth Phil Keech was sin-binned on a touch judge report midway through the second half. During Keech’s absence, Geelong scored 17 points.
Better players for Bendigo were Emilio Maddison, Trent Polosa, Leonie Sevudredre, Harry Anderson and Jack Smeelie.
Next Saturday, the Miners play Maroondah at North Croydon.
