BIG WEEKEND: Zak Dempster is ready for the Battle of Buninyong.

WITH the Australia Road National Championships looming this weekend in Ballarat, leading Bendigo cyclist Zak Dempster is primed and ready to compete in what is expected to be another gruelling Battle of Buninyong.
Dempster, part of a large Bendigo contingent battling it out for the coveted green and gold championships jersey, has put almost 4000km into his legs over the past two months, in preparation for the 163.2km Elite Men’s Road Race on Sunday.
And with another European season under his belt, where he rode as a stagiaire for HTC-Highroad, Dempster is set for big things in Ballarat.
However he admitted he would have to race not only strong, but smart, to win in Ballarat, which is believed to have the best field in the event’s history.
“It’s not just about having the most incredible set of legs, you have to play the bluff a bit,” Dempster said.
“It will be a race of attrition, but you have to use your head.
“(But) I just want to let my legs do the talking.”
Dempster’s career continued to bloom in 2011 as the former Bendigo International Madison, Melbourne to Warrnambool and Australian Under 23 Time Trial winner took out the tough Tour of Doonhame in Scotland, the Dengie Marshes Tour race in Essex, Severn Bridge Road Race and the Rutland-Melton CiCLE Classic.
Riding for the Rapha Condor Sharp team, Dempster finished the European season as the number-one ranked rider in Britain.
Dempster, who returned to the area in mid-October after another season in Europe, says he’s approaching his cycling peak.
“I feel like an AFL player who’s got three or four seasons under their belt,” Dempster said.
“I’m a lot stronger physically.
“It (success) doesn’t all hinge on a big pre-season, I don’t need everything to go right to win.
“I’m a bit older now, and I’m ready to have a crack at some big international events.”
The strong Bendigo and central Victorian contingent of riders competing in Ballarat this weekend includes Darren Lapthorne, Lachlan Norris, David Pell, David
Fairburn, Robbie Hucker, Peter Ladd, Kate Finegan, Katherine O’Shea and Sean Finning.
