A talented pre-teen has taken out Bendigo’s most prestigious prizes for young artists.
12-year-old James Earl won an award in the performing arts section of the Bendigo Raw Arts Awards, for his recording of one of his piano compositions, Five on a Treasure Island. And the youngster was stoked.
“It makes me feel even better about my music - I just love playing,” he said.
“I’m writing a sonata-style piece for piano at the moment with the second movement featuring flute.”
Earl has been immersed in music for most of his life, playing the trumpet since age four and piano from eight, through the encouragement of his father, Chris.
“One of my first performances was as a percussionist in the Commonwealth Youth Games opening ceremony band,” he said.
The community minded younster will play the Last Post at some of the Anzac week ceremonies at hospitals and nursing homes;  he also sings every Sunday in the St Paul’s Cathedral Choir.
Earl’s career aspirations lie abroad, however.
“I hope to one day play with orchestras around the world. The Berlin Philharmonic is my favorite.
James will put his $1000 prize towards a new trumpet and attending Border Music Camp in Albury.
